Powerhouse Wizard 2008
In October 2008, the Powerhouse Museum announced Alexandra Gilmour as the 2008 Powerhouse Wizard.
As the youngest recipient to receive the Award since its inception in 2004, Alexandra was delighted to receive the award and is looking forward to representing the Museum during her term as Powerhouse Wizard.
Alexandra is an Industrial Designer and graduate of University of Technology Sydney. Completing a Masters in Design (Research) and exploring the idea of nanofiltration, Alexandra’s research looks at the use of steam in dishwashing applications. Her research project has evolved from a conceptual steam dishwasher (Swash) developed for her undergraduate degree. At present the project is in prototype/testing stage, experimenting with the use of steam and its cleaning performance on dishware. She has an Innovation Patent assigned to steam dishwasher development and is further developing ‘Swash’ for commercial application.
Rachel Bending, Founder and Director of Bird Textiles and Slingflings, was awarded a Highly Commended citation in the 2008 Powerhouse Wizard Awards.

The Powerhouse Wizard award, sponsored by Wizard Home Loans, recognises emerging leaders in Australian innovation and achievement. Established by the Powerhouse Museum in 2004, the award includes a $5,000 career development scholarship and also provides a platform for the recipient to engage with new audiences and showcase their talents during their term as Powerhouse Wizard.
Past winners include engineer and science communicator, Dr James Bradfield Moody (ABC TV's The New Inventors), filmmaker Khoa Do, director of film, Footy Legends, engineer Dr Dominic Dowling who developed ‘Quake Safe’; and Dr Naomi McClure-Griffiths, Astrophysicist with CSIRO’s Australian National Telescope Facility.
Nominations for the Powerhouse Wizard Award will re-open in mid 2009.
